While reading I came across a quote that I thought was very well written and caught my attention. Helen Burns, Jane's friend from Lowood Institution, was scolded for her failure to wash her nails and her face. In reality, this was an impossible task because the water which she were to use was frozen solid. Miss Scatcherd, unaware of Helen's inability, calls her to the middle of the room where she whips her neck with a bundle of twigs. Jane inquires how Helen can hide her frustration when she is flogged and sent to the middle of the room by her teacher. After Jane confesses that she would be unable to withstand the beating, Helen replies, “Yet it would be your duty to bear it, if you could not avoid it: it is weak and silly to say you cannot bear what it is your fate to be required to bear” (56). What I interpret, is that Helen is accepting that she cannot avoid the disciplinary actions and so all that’s left to do is deal with them. It was meant to be that Miss Scatcherd would flog her as she did and so it would be silly to say she could not deal with that which was to be her fate and to act recklessly as Jane insisted.
I like this quote because it actually has a connection to real life. As an athlete, like I know you are Max, there are times that you don't believe that you can accomplish your goal. The task may seem daunting at first but when the time comes you can get the job done. Just like Jane she has no choice but to take the punishment when the time comes.
