Allusion: Proverbs 15:17

"Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith" (75).

Jane Eyre alludes to the bible when she talks of her feelings towards her new home. She refers to Solomon’s saying in Proverbs 15:17 regarding friendship and poor treatment. This quote seems very strong and very accurate for Jane’s situation. Jane prefers her new temporary home of Lowood Institution over her old home at Gateshead because of those people she is exposed to. At the Reed’s residence, she lived in excellent quality but those around her were cruel and inhospitable towards her because she was an orphan. This was not true of the Lowood Institution. Here, she was one of many orphans who all faced similar challenges so they did not judge her and instead showed love and care for her while living in lesser, more dreary conditions. Despite the difference in living quality, Jane prefered the love of those around her over luxury and neglect.
